Despite many examples of the same throughout Douglas’s story, this was the first that came to mind after reading the prompt. She was, by all description, the purest of heart to own a slave of all the masters Douglas had. No matter how warm her intentions may have been upon his arrival at her home, she too became callous and would corporally punish Douglas for going against her wishes after her change of heart regarding his education (Douglas, 1185). I completely agree with your final sentiments- while the slave owners may not have cared about the atrocities carried against the slaves, by appealing to their own situations Douglas gives these men an example of how they will be negatively impacted by the dark grasps of slavery, appealing for their own support of abolition. By using his experiences with her and the religious slave owners as an example, he shows them that even the kindest and pious will be led down the path of slavery’s evil.
