ECO 160 Introduction to Economics
News Brief Instructions and Example

The objectives of the current event assignment are for students:
To gain knowledge of current events as they relate to economics
To further develop writing skills
To analyze current events in the context of economics
To apply economic concepts and principles.
Students will search for a mainstream news article (last twelve months) that provides an example of the concepts and principles we are studying in this course. Your selection needs to align with one or more of the topics identified for your assigned date (see Syllabus or Course Outline). Students will be graded on their written assignment. Submissions are scheduled alphabetically after spring break. Please make sure you see the scheduled list of names under Course Outline or Syllabus. Late submission will be accepted only under extreme circumstance. Keep in mind that we only have 8 weeks after Spring break. It makes it extremely difficult to accommodate late work. Please adhere to the following requirements:
Choose an appropriate article. Your current event must come from a news article. Opinions from blogs and social media are not acceptable. The current event should come from a newspaper (NY Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, etc.), news magazine (The Economist, Newsweek, etc.), or research organizations (primary sources such as the Federal Reserve, BLS, etc.)

Submit news article for approval. Submit your news article to review one week ahead of time to make sure that your article is relevant, current, and not repetitive.

Review the article carefully. Read your article carefully and find information in the content that connects with course concepts and principles. Explain how this connection can help us understand the course concepts and principles.

Summarize the article. Summaries should be at least three good paragraphs, but not longer than 1/2 the length of the original article. At the end, write a paragraph stating your opinion of the event or article (see example below). You may write if you agree or disagree with the event, possible outcomes of the event, or any other opinion you have regarding the article.

Highlight, bold or underline main economic concepts and principles. Incorporate in your summary and conclusion the concepts and principles illustrated in the article as they relate to money and banking. Use a minimum of five economic concepts that you have learned in this class. See example below.

Cite your article using APA or MLA style. Make sure to submit a scanned copy if obtained from a paper source; otherwise provide full online site address in citation. See example below.
