Explain how the concept of resilience developed in your novel and two other texts from the course?

you will write a 510 paragraph critical analysis essay in response to the following essay question:

How is the concept of resilience developed in your novel and two other texts from the course?

To get started, consult the Texts used in ENG4U document for a list of the texts in the course. Please download the file. In addition to your novel, select two texts to analyze for your essay. The texts you choose should not be the same type. For example, dont choose two personal essays or two poems.

you will submit your completed essay outline, including a thesis statement, and have it approved by the teacher.

Once you have selected two potential texts (in addition to your novel) to use in your essay, consider how narrative elements and literary lenses can help you answer the essay question about resilience.

Narrative Element
Step 1:

poetic and literary devices
narrative structure
character
theme

Literary lenses
personal response
psychological
gender
socio-economic
contextual
archetypal

Referring to your novel and the two texts you selected, use the Text analysis graphic organizer to note down examples of resilience in each text.

As you fill out the graphic organizer, you may decide that you want to swap out one (or both) of the texts you initially selected for a different text from the course. It is up to you to come up with what you think is the best combination of novel and two texts to answer the essay question. Just remember that you need to choose two texts of different types.

The graphic organizer will help show which narrative elements and literary lenses could be best used to compare all three texts.

You are now in a position to formulate an opinion about how the concept of resilience is developed in your novel and two texts.

Example of an opinion:
Human beings require strong support networks to overcome adversity.

Texts used to support the opinion:

The Great Gatsby (novel), The Step Not Taken (personal essay), and A Litany for Survival (poem)

Two of the many ways to prove this opinion:

Using narrative elements of character and theme

or

Using psychological lens and narrative element of character

Once you have formulated your opinion, create a thesis statement for your essay.

Examples of thesis statements:
By exploring the need for social connections through character and theme in both DAngelos essay The Step Not Taken and Lordes poem A Litany for Survival, Jay Gatsbys lack of resilience can be viewed as a result of isolation.

By applying the psychological lens to characters and their relationships in The Great Gatsby, A Step not Taken, and A Litany for Survival, the need for strong support networks becomes clear.

Writing your essay outline
The outline for your 510 paragraph critical analysis essay must follow this structure:

conclusion
Use the ENG4U Final Test essay outline template to guide your essay planning.

The novel I have chosen is The handmaids tale. The writer can choose 2 other texts from the Texts used in ENG4U file.
