The International Chamber of Commerce created the Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy (BASCAP) in the early 2000s. The intent was to provide businesses with practical advice on ways to protect the company’s intellectual property while also ensuring that the company acted appropriately toward the IP of others.
The Model Intellectual-Property Guidelines for Business (https://iccwbo.org/publication/ip-guidelines-for-business-english-version/.) includes 21 points that guide businesses in the development of best practices in dealing with intellectual property.
Your task is to determine to what extent a specific company has addressed the 21 points. You will need to select a company.
Very few companies will have a document titled “intellectual property guidelines for XYZ Company.” Instead the content may be spread throughout several documents including employee manuals, corporate policy guides, contracts between suppliers, training directives, and so on. You may even have to search their website or call them.
You are going to write a report detailing how the company you selected addresses each of the 21 points.
Each point should be on a separate page. List the BASCAP point at the top of the page. Explain how the company’s content does or does not address the point and the guidance given. This is not a copy and paste assignment. You should not be quoting the source of information. Paraphrasing requires you to understand the content and that is required.
Include links to the pages where you found the information. If it’s a document, please attach it to the assignment. This means that unless I can find the source of the information you are writing about online, you will attach it to the assignment.
If you need to submit a ZIP file to contain all the source documents, please submit the assignment as a separate submission.
While it is expected that you will not be able to find a company’s guide for all 21 points, you need to have found the answer for at least 10 of them.
It’s easiest to get the information you will need to analyze if you (or someone you know) works at the company you selected. Some of the documents you will need to access may only be accessible to employees.
Some multinational companies do have many of these documents available freely on their website. Your task is to search for them.
Begin working on this assignment early. You may end up having to select a different company if the first one you chose doesn’t have readily accessible information on these 21 points.
As you progress through the course and the intellectual property content, you will find yourself with a better understanding of what each of the points means and how it relates to the company.
