The length of the paper is to be no more than 1000 words, including references and footnotes. I would like to grade these papers anonymously, so please do not include your name on the document you upload to Blackboard.

In Why Not Socialism?, G. A. Cohen argues that socialism is the most just way to organize the economy, and is superior to capitalism. This is the main conclusion of his book as presented in class. In this short paper, you will evaluate the argument Cohen provides in favor of this position. You will do this in the following way, with each item in the following list roughly corresponding to one paragraph of your paper:

1. Explain Cohens conclusion, including what he means by socialism.

2. Explain the main premises Cohen provides to establish this conclusion, making it clear how they support his view.

3. Describe what you think is the strongest objection to Cohens argument using ideas from either Hayeks Use of knowledge in society or Schmidtzs The institution of property. Your objection should either (a) be a reason to reject as false one of Cohens main premises, or (b) be reason for thinking that Cohens premises, even if true, fail to support his conclusionfor example, because they are incomplete and leave out an important consideration you raise in your objection.

4. Explain what you believe is Cohens best response to the objection you raise. If Cohen were reading your paper, how would he defend his view from your objection?

5. Evaluate whether (a) the response from part 4 convincingly addresses the objection from part 3, or (b) the objection from part 3 succeeds in undermining Cohens conclusion despite the response from part 4. Be sure to explain your reasoning.
