Explain and expand on an aspect of your identity (for example, your religion, culture, race, sexual or gender identity, affinity group, etc.). How has this aspect of your identity shaped your life experiences thus far? The barritone sound from the timbre of my violin started to ooze as I tuned it to B octave to record a composition in my home studio. It has been 13 years since I first started learning carnatic violin, a specialized form of Indian classical music. The nascent learning years seemed like a trudge, often marred with the thoughts of my giving up playing the instrument altogether. Fortunately, the demons of indiscipline, accompanied with bouts of thought that this is a chore were slayed by my guiding mother over the years. Now, frequently, during my stage performances, I am gratified to watch the joyous impact it has on the audience with a sense of fulfillment. The reason I am drawn to music, in any of its varied styles and forms, is because it creates a refugee of cushioning peace, as music by itself is untainted by the plethora of mundane issues plaguing us. A form of self-expression that sometimes is hard for me to express, music has given me an identity, a recognition to discover myself, connect with others, and to live with a sense of optimism. Periodically, it serves as a cocoon during unpleasant moments and restores my inner harmony as a comforting friend. With every passing day, I am humbled and contented with the thought that I can enjoy this journey with my enduring friend as a lifelong learner.
