Topic 2: Equality, Civil Rights, and Affirmative Action
Though the American political system has been founded upon the ideal of equality (see the Declaration of Independence for example), it argued that such equality has not yet been accomplished. There are many groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. that suffer from discrimination and economic hardship. Though there is very little argument about the existence of these inequalities, rigorous debates characterize American politics as to how to deal with these inequalities. Many have argued that though the government has the right and responsibility to end unjustified discrimination by establishing de jure equality, the government shouldnt promote de facto equality by measures like affirmative action. On the other hand, many have argued that present day inequalities are rooted in historical oppression and discriminations. Establishing de jure equality for discriminated groups like African Americans is not enough. Government should not only promote de facto equality through affirmative action but also provide reparations for past discriminations.
The essay should develop an argument about the state of equality in America and what should the government and the citizens do to foster more equality
