The mikveh (also mikvah) is one of the most important items in Jewish practice but one of the least known outside of the Jewish community. Depending on which movement a person belongs to, the mikveh is used for different things as part of a persons conversion ceremony, for spiritual renewal after a period of mourning, or before a wedding, just to give a few examples.
The most common use of the mikveh is to mark a married womans menstrual cycle. For an Orthodox perspective, go to What is a Mikvah? at https://www.mikvah.org/what-is-mikvah and watch the short videos that explain how it is used and why. Feel free to peruse the rest of the website for more information.
As you can see from mikvah.orgs map of mikvot (plural of mikveh) available throughout the world, they are not accessible to the vast majority of people. What does this suggest about the practice of the mikveh as a whole? What are some of the other obstacles that might prevent a woman from performing her mikveh duties? Why might a woman choose to not follow this halakhah at all?
