Assignment Question
In different ways, Weber’s work on rationality and Foucault’s work on power and discipline/surveillance both speak to how individuals shape themselves to meet the needs of modern society. Drawing on the works of Symbolic Interactionism (SI) alongside Weber and Foucault, 1.) identify what aspects of rationality affect our behaviors, and 2.) explain how micro-processes of interaction help create these outcomes.
A strong essay will draw on the text and lectures to define important concepts and analyze the topics. To analyze you should do more than summarize what the authors wrote. You should evaluate and critically examine the readings to show how what they wrote relates to the essay question.
A clear answer for both questions then is not just a regurgitation of the readings or lecture material. It connects aspects of the texts to the assigned question. This paper must be at least 3 double-spaced pages with normal fonts and margins. However, you may find you need to write more than three pages to adequately complete the assignment. Use of in-text citations is mandatory. Use only course readings, lectures/discussions, and material on ELMS as you write the paper.
