In this topic choice, you will choose one character (or more if allowed), and you will make a specific claim about the role or place the character holds within the work being studied. You should study and note their actions, reactions, word choice and the images/symbols that surround them. Also, you should look at their development as the character in the work being studied. Are they progressing or evolving in any one direction? Is this happening for any one reason?

Themes and/or thematic Symbolism:
For this topic, you can investigate (and I mean investigate!) any reoccurring theme. Here, you are closely examining any overt repetition or focus on a particular idea, concept, or element that begin to develop an intended theme. In doing so, you are surfacing what the artist intends for us to learn through the use of such a theme.

You may also focus on imagery that begins to build the use of symbolism. By identifying this use of symbolism, you will surface what larger lesson or point can be learned through the used images. Remember, you must collect and order the works use and choice of imagery to best show your audience what can be learned through the presence of the symbolism.

Contextual Analysis:
This essay choice looks at historical and societal (past and present) events and connects their effects and intended meanings to the work being studied. Here, you are connecting the audience to what the creator of the work knows about history and society, and in turn, highlighting what the historical context of the work could better show an audience about the works many meanings. Note: This is NOT a research paper. You can use the work in question that give historical and societal context and any other known, societal happenings to support your point, but these are the only sources allowed for this essay. Also note: You may use current events to better illustrate your claim about the work in question.
