OE Management Functions: Organizing

Organizing is a core competence of a manager. One of the ways a manager can do this is through the management of employees. A manager has to formulate and redesign strategies aimed to motivate and retain employees. This can be done through, for instance, eliminating bias and discrimination, providing incentives, etc. Although the roles of a manager may be standard, in planning, organizing, controlling, and leading, these roles may differ in how they are applied top, middle, and even first-line managers. Regardless, retention and motivation of employees is a sustainable goal for many managers as it curtails the costs for hiring or rehiring and allows managers to mitigate rising costs by training the employees it already has. Managers grapple with managing human resources as employees begin to fight back against traditional models that have been employees in the past. In the wake of the New Year 2023, employers were forced to order employees back to work, while employers retaliated by citing the inconvenience of commuting and the unproductive nature of in-office work. Retention of employees in light of these has to do with communication and interpersonal relationships that can be employed to ascertain that employees are retained and compliant in order to aid in issues pertaining to the corporate culture, training of acquired hires, and problem-solving nuances (Cutter, 2023).

In a world marred by quiet quitting; employees leaving the workplace without notice, can managers really continue to use the same retention strategies they have used in the past, or does the new generation require new informed strategies that address the changing needs of employees?
