Substances are involved in many crimes. Many offenders are under the influence when they commit a crime and many offenders’ crimes involve the selling and distribution of substances. On the other hand, many substances are used socially or medically and can be beneficial. For this assignment, write a 2–3-page paper about a selected substance and treatment options for individuals who are abusing that substance. Choose one of the following types of substances: Alcohol. Cannabis. Opioids. Benzodiazepines. Discuss the history of the substance, both social and legal. Consider whether the substance has been used in religious services. Discuss legal uses of the substance and how these substances when used appropriately can be beneficial. Discuss how the substance can be used inappropriately, both from a legal perspective and from the perspective of its potential for harm. Discuss the regulation of the substance in the United States—this can be compared to regulation in other countries as well. Discuss treatment options for individuals who have a substance use disorder and are using your chosen substance. Please reference academic literature supporting both the positive side and the negative side of the substance you have chosen—you may need to use two or more articles for this—and also reference “Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders” in Section II of the DSM-5-TR in your discussion.
