Discuss the roles of federal, state, and local public health agencies in the development of standards for informatics in healthcare.
Health informatics is the scientific field dealing with resources, devices, and formalized methods for optimizing the storage, retrieval and management of biomedical information for problem solving and decision making (Haieganu & Cluj-Napoca, 2016, p 91). Although health informatics has been around since the 1960s it is considered rather novel in the clinical setting and the roles of federal, state and local health agencies are still emerging. One of the earliest federal acts to protect patients was The Privacy Act of 1974 which assures the veracity of collected data by allowing patient to know what the info is and how its being shared. Internal Review Boards, HIPAA, Affordable Care act…are just a few of the federal and state legislations governing patient medical records and hence healthcare informatics. Lastly, public health organizations increasingly face the need to be able to share data among themselves and ultimately with other providers (Vest et al., 2014). This includes immunizations, vital records, influenza statistics…the public health system is at risk technologically of being left behind however the use of data sharing capabilities will dramatically close this gap.
