Guidance
This assessment provides an opportunity to critically examine two published research studies that use quantitative research designs and discuss the methodologies drawing on the concepts covered throughout the module. You should focus on the key concepts that you have learnt in weeks 1-5 rather than trying to appraise the whole paper and should compare and contrast the two papers, not treat them separately. A good report will consider both relevant epidemiological and statistical concepts, reflecting critically on how they relate to the research aim and how they help to answer the research question. To gain higher level marks, you will need to demonstrate a critical engagement with the studies. This will mean clearly referring the methodology and results back to the study aims, highlighting benefits and limitations of the study setups.
You will be assessed on your knowledge and understanding of key concepts in epidemiology and statistics. You will not get any marks for displaying detailed knowledge of the studied health problem, so be careful not to waste too many words on describing aetiologies where they are not relevant to evaluate the studies!
