This extra-credit assignment involves watching the documentary linked above (it’s divided into two episodes, and you should roll the first one back a bit to see it from the start), which the History Channel presented to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. And it requires that you write a 4-page essay, in which you should discuss several aspects of the documentary. A list of things you can include — pick and choose several you’d most like to address:

–What is meant by the term “slavery by another name”;

–Why Black people moved West;

–The establishment of Black towns in Oklahoma

–Effects on Black people’s lives of Oklahoma’s becoming a state;

–Lynchings: how many occurred between 1889 and 1992 (you’ll see that pass quickly in the documentary), what they were, why they took place and the motivation behind them

–Who was Ida B. Wells?

–What life in the Greenwood section of Tulsa was like;

–The effects of the establishment of Black institutions, such as the first Black newspaper in Oklahoma;

–The context: the wave of race massacres in different places around that time and what was motivating them;

— Actual details of the massacre — just the main outline of what occurred leading to it, what the people involved did, how the authorities acted, people killed and property destroyed;

— The aftermath — what happened to the land and property that Black people in Greenwood used to live on;

–What has been done/not done to help restore the community or compensate the people and their descendants;

–Why the history was, until recently, sanitized/hidden, and the effects of this;

–How those events from long ago relate to recent events in our country, how it should inform our understanding of our country and some of the current issues it faces.

–And If it isn’t inherent in your discussion in response to these points, you should explain why this is a vital thing for citizens 100 years later to know about this

(this extra credit assignment determines whether I pass or fail and obviously I procrastinated. thank you!)
