In this assignment, you are required to write a report for a clinical biochemistry journal which evaluates the clinical importance of cardiac troponin as a diagnostic and prognostic marker and critically discuss the assays used to measure this analyte.
Your report should include the following;
a) An explanation of what troponin is, its physiological role and isoforms
b) An explanation of its clinical use as a cardiac biomarker
c) The pros and cons of using POCT versus laboratory-based assays. 1. An introduction to the coursework will be given in the first synchronous online session at the beginning of semester 1. Students will be taught about cardiac biomarkers in week 2, but will be expected to research the use of troponin. Working as a scientist will require you to find, read and critically evaluate scientific literature. You will also need to be able to understand how analytical methods are validated and evaluated. This task will assess your ability to explore recent journal articles to research the clinical use of troponin in cardiac care settings and to evaluate different analytical approaches used to measure this biomarker.
The submission deadline falls at the beginning of teaching week 6. All teaching relevant to this assessment will have been concluded. Feedback on this assignment can be used to inform your work on CW2.
