Discuss how we think about and treat diseases changes dramatically over time. Many social forces influence medicine and learning to understand that is essential for fostering a humanistic perspective on medical care. To have you practice this way of thinking, you will write a paper describing how people treated and experienced a single disease from the ancient period to the present. I ask that you try to find a way to talk about the condition in the Ancient, Medieval, Early Modern, and Modern Periods. (For some diseases, this will not be possible. I will let you know if your illness does not fit some of those periods.) You will be expected to read both primary and secondary sources to explore the varied ways your selected condition existed across time too. As you read and write, you will develop a thesis that argues why studying the history of your disease chosen matters today. Your response must be specific to your disease.
