Title page (first page; template has the format) Your paper will begin with an APA formatted title page. Introduction The introduction section presents your interviewee and why you selected them. This section provides an introduction to the paper but mainly an introduction to the person you interviewed. You can use their name or initials. Include their age, gender identification, race/ethnicity (and ethnicity of parents if multi-racial/ethnic), employment/student status, education, relationship to you, where they live. You may include any information you feel relevant for readers to know about the interviewee. The average for this section is 1 page or less. This section will have the complete transcriipt verbatim interview, translated into English if necessary. The interview is a major component of this assignment. Below are the questions you can ask. You are welcome to add questions. The average for this section is 3-5 pages. Immigration and migration history of the respondent (Ch. 3) “Please tell me about your family’s immigration to the United States?” (if immigration is relevant): “How did you (and your family) finally settle in the Central Valley?” “Did you and your family face any challenges during your relocation?” “How many generations of your family have lived in the United States? Socioeconomic status (SES) (Ch. 3) “What is your highest level of education?” “What was the highest level of education obtained by your parents?” “What is your current job?” “What is (are) the current job(s) of your parents?” “Do you feel that you experience any barriers to employment?” Health Access (Ch. 3) “Have you encountered any recent or past problems that have interfered with your daily activities at home, work, or school?” (e.g., physical and mental health problems, legal difficulties, stressful working conditions, risk behaviors, etc.). “How have you dealt with these problems?” “Do you have access to regular medical care?” “Do you use any cultural/traditional medical care?” Service utilization (Ch. 3) “Have you used any services (e.g., medical, mental health, legal, economic services, etc.) in an attempt to improve your life situation?” If yes, “Why did you choose these particular services?” If no, “Would you consider such services? Why or why not?” “Would you consider psychological or mental health services? Why or why not?” Cultural Capital (Ch. 4) What do you consider your primary language? Did you have any difficulty learning to read or write the English language? How would you describe the neighborhood where you grew up? What illegal activities, if any, were present in the neighborhood where you grew up? What employment opportunities were available to your parents or family in the neighborhood where you grew up? Do you have immediate family members who are doctors, lawyers, or other professionals? What types of jobs have your family members had throughout their lives? Did anyone ever discourage or prevent you from pursuing academics or a professional career? Do you consider school easy or difficult for you? Ethnic identity Socialization
(Ch. 4) Start with an explanation of ethnicity: “An ethnicity is a group whose members identify with each other on the basis of common nationality or shared cultural traditions. For example, they can be as broad as “Native American” or as narrow as “Cherokee”. “As an ethnic minority person, how do you identify yourself?” “Do you remember when you learned about your ethnicity?” “What thoughts/feelings do you have about your ethnic group?” (e.g., its social problems and contributions, good and bad points, etc.) “What thoughts/feelings do you have about the dominant culture?” “What thoughts/feelings do you have about other ethnic minority groups?” Experiences with racism and discrimination (Ch. 4) “Have you had any personal experiences with racism?” If the response is “No,” “Do you know of other members of your ethnic group who have experienced racism and discrimination? Please describe these incidents.” “Has discrimination ever interfered with your life?” (e.g., with your work or school performance, relationships, etc.). If yes, “Please explain.” “How do you deal with racism and discrimination?” If the respondent does not report any experiences with racism and discrimination, “How would you deal with racism and discrimination?” Do you or have you had a close relationship with someone from another ethnic or cultural group? Did your relationship/friendship help you learn more about their culture? Ethnic Group-Specific Questions (Chapters 5-11 depending on ethnicity) Using the chapter that relates to the ethnicity of your interviewee develop 2-3 questions you can ask to find out more about their experience as a member of that group. Some ideas are: Social Institutions: Do you belong or participate in any social or other group that is specifically for members of your ethnic group? (social club, sports league, religious group, student club, online group, etc.?) Social Change and Resistance: Are you involved in any political or social movement groups that focus on your ethnic group? (political action group, activist group, solidarity group, etc.) Analysis section (4 paragraphs) This section will contain an analysis of the interview. It will have a total of 4 paragraphs. Two analysis topics are required. The other two are selected by you. This is where you will apply the terms, theories, and content learned in the course to the lived experience of your interviewee. Parenthetical or in-text citations, where you paraphrase the textbook and any outside resources and then provide the citation, must be used in this section. Course Project: Learning APA Format Ethnicity Comparison (2-3 paragraphs) In this section, you will compare the ethnic background of your interviewee to your ethnic background and compare your experiences to that of the person you interviewed. This is where you will use the 2 articles you located, one for each ethnicity category yours and the person you interviewed. You will identify at least 2 commonalities and 2 differences from the topics used in the interview (immigration, acculturation, ethnic identity, cultural capital, etc.). Conclusion In the conclusion, you will summarize what you learned from the interview and provide your opinion about the interview process. References (on it’s own page at the very end) List the full reference for the textbook and each article in APA format. If you use secondary citations in the paper, you may need to list additional resources here depending on the format you used. See the APA module for help. You are able to complete this assignment WITHOUT using any secondary citations. Be careful if and when you decide to use them!
