This document provides some minimal guidelines and requirements for writing the research proposal + paper

1. This is an academic paper with a critical analysis.
2. Evaluation includes integration of sources
3. Title page + bibliography must be included
4. APA referencing, including proper in-text citations.
5. Note: sources must be cited, including page numbers (even if concept or idea is not a
direct quote)

– Canadian criminal justice issue(s). Note: students can conduct a comparison/contrast
study with another country; for example an American/UK focus — but it must include a Canadian context.

Possible paper ideas, not exhaustive:
Theories: Compare medias studies and criminological theories
Mediated discourse(s): looking at one or multiple mediated sources (i.e. news print, social media, television, flim) on a specific criminological topic
Topic(s): popular criminology, representation of the police, lawyers, judges, juries, penal system, criminal law/legal discourse/ probation, parole, reintegration/release back into community, and/or offenders (i.e women, LGBTQ+, men, racialized/Indigenous groups), gangsters, mobs/ serial killers through mediated sources.

2-3 PAGES, excluding title/bibliography.
Objective: The main purpose of the proposal is to ground the value of your critical analysis. A proposal helps organizing your thoughts with an outline
1. Determine general topic: interest, information & focus
2. Sources: preliminary reading & record keeping. Identify gaps in the literature
3. Problem: Identify the problem – this will help frame your preliminary thesis statement
4. Organization: method of investigation – mind map/outline is based on your preliminary
reading, draft highlights important, interesting points, which includes your own ideas about the topic.
The proposal includes:
– Introduction
– What is the problem your paper is addressing? What problem is under investigation?
– Begin to identify background context
– Think about key ideas, terms
– Preliminary thesis statement
– Identify main points
– Selection of method + theory
– Questions you may want to consider & answer
– Group ideas and possible links/connection
– Conclusion – restatement thesis statement, identify next steps?

– Proposal should include subheadings.
