Psych 5473 Article Review Instructions
The articles in this course are considered popular or classic studies in the field of Developmental
Psychology and are important for you to review and understand. Your article reviews should be 2
to 4 pages in length, double-spaced. This means you will need to summarize the information and
select the most relevant information to include in your review.
Papers must adhere to the following format requirements:
Times New Roman font, 1 inch margins, a correctly formatted header (which should be your
first and last name with the page #, see example) at .5 top margin, after paragraph spacing set
to zero, and written in narrative form with a title (heading) for each section.
You are not allowed to use direct quotes in any section of this summary except when stating
the hypotheses the researchers were trying to support while conducting their research. A quoted
hypothesis must be in proper APA format. Read each article thoroughly taking notes (keeping in
mind what information you should be looking for) while reading the article and write your essay
from the notes. The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate you understand the research that
was conducted and the implications of this research. In order to accomplish this task, you will
need to summarize the research in your own words. Remember paraphrased information also
needs to include the source reference and secondary source references. See the Article example
for more help.
Title each section of your review. The title should be on a line by itself left justified.
(Introduction, Hypothesis, Participants, Methods, Results, Discussion/Conclusions, Importance).
Within your essay follow the directions below:
Introduction – Summarize the previous research cited in the introduction of the article and
explain why the researchers of this article chose to pursue this research (200 250 words).
This means you will need to know how to properly cite a secondary citation in APA style.
Hypothesis – What was the hypothesis or hypotheses for the research reported in the article?
Participants – Describe the participants in the study. What age were they? Where did they
live? How many people were involved?
Methods – Summarize the Method (aka Procedures). You should be able to look at this
section and understand how the researchers set up the experiment(s)
Results of the experiments. Unless you have already completed a research class, the actual
statistics may be hard to understand. This is not your task. However, you should be able to
look at this section and understand the researchers general findings and summarize them.
Discussion/Conclusions – Summarize the discussions/conclusions of the researchers. Did
they feel the experiment supported their original hypothesis? What did their research add to
the literature in this area? What did the researchers believe should be explored next by
researchers? (200-250 words)
Importance – Why was this research important to child development? How would this
research be applicable in real world situations? What influence has this research had on
current developmental research?
