This “statement” is essentially a statement of the students’ informed positions on ethics and morality in their professional and personal lives. Students may consult Howard and Korvers Ethics for the real world as a guide on how to present ethical commitments.
The statement, which should be 5-6 pages in length, must include the following sections
My ethical framework: In this section of at least 1 page, the student must describe the ethical theories that form the foundation of the students ethical viewpoint. Example: as student who favors virtue ethics could discuss her core virtues, Aristotle, and how these virtues will guide future actions. Similarly, a student who primarily view the Bible as his ethical framework could describe a specific ethical framework (and corresponding scriptures) that frames his approach to ethics. All references shall be cited. This is a personal statement built from the existing ethical theories.
My ethical fitness regime: As discussed in the course, ones ethical muscles must be exercised regularly to be ready to act. In this section of 0.5-1 pages, the student will commit to specific ethical actions that will aid in building lifelong ethical fitness.
My ethical environment: In this section, describe the ethical environment of your professional workplace. Be certain to describe any ethical codes (from your employer or professional organizations) that one is bound in this profession.
My personal ethical commitments: In this final section, students will present statements of their core ethical commitments that will shape their personal and professional interactions. Examples are found in Howard & Korvers Ethics for the real world, Appendix B.
