Overview: For the final paper, you will identify a current educational issue of interest and apply a sociological theory from this course to analyze the educational issue. Start by selecting a present-day educational issue that you think is important and can be addressed by a theory from this course. The sociological theory you choose should be from the textbook. You can choose a theory from Chapter 1 or a more specific theory from the readings. You will need to supplement your explanation of the theory by drawing on an outside source. In the paper you will describe the educational issue (using credible sources from the assigned textbook as well as outside sources), describe the sociological theory (using credible sources from the assigned textbook as well as outside sources), and then assess how well the theory helps us understand this educational issue.
Final Paper Outline:
1. Educational issue Choose a current educational issue occurring in the United States or around the world. You can focus on a K-12, post-secondary, or out-of- school educational topic. You can think of this educational issue as a problem in education today that needs to be addressed. Describe the educational issue using credible sources. What is the problem and who is affected?
a. Include a thesis statement at end of section to lead to the discussion of the sociological theory
2. Sociological theory before you analyze or apply a theory to the educational issue, you need to discover the theory and bring it into being in the context of your paper. Choose a theory from Chapter 1 or a specific reading in the textbook. Establish its context and purpose and delineate its main argument. Consider the questions you asked yourself while reading

can use the theorists vocabulary. You need to explain why the author is claiming what they are claiming; try to justify their theory rather than simply stating it
3. Application of theory Apply the sociological theory you selected to the particular educational issue. How does the theory make sense of the educational issue? If the theory is older, how does it apply to contemporary educational issues? Are there any limitations to this theory in its application to the educational issue? 4. Conclusion bring your discussion of the educational issue to a close. You can include suggestions for research, policy, or practice or recommendations to address issue
