Describe how you might diagnose and investigate the hazard, describing the environmental health issue, and defining characteristics of possible exposures (e.g. what chemicals/hazards are present, what health issues may be caused by the chemicals/hazards in question, fate/transport, environmental and biological persistence).

Topic:
Radon: High levels of naturally occurring radon were found in the bedrock where a new housing development is being built. Concerned community members began testing levels in the basements of their existing homes, and many fear that levels across the region are unacceptably high. There are rumors that nearby wells may also be contaminated with radon. Define and characterize the risks posed by radon to this community.

Instructions:
Assume you are a public health specialist employed at a state health department and are faced with an environmental health scenario (you will choose this from the list provided). In this role at the health department, you are responsible for assessing the health risks to the population relevant to this scenario. Develop your paper for a non-scientific audience, and be sure to consider the community viewpoint. The guiding questions you need to address are related to the core functions of public health (https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/ehs/ephli/core_ess.htm) and the course content. Create a paper in the style of a CEHA report for the public. The paper must be 5-8 double-spaced pages, not including the executive summary, references, or title page. To educate your target audience, your paper must include the following:

A title page
An Executive Summary, outlining the objectives of the CEHA and briefly summarizing its contents. Be articulate and comprehensive, to assure your audience of your capacity to address this issue as a competent representative of a public health agency.
Describe how you might diagnose and investigate the hazard, describing the environmental health issue, and defining characteristics of possible exposures (e.g. what chemicals/hazards are present, what health issues may be caused by the chemicals/hazards in question, fate/transport, environmental and biological persistence)
Inform the community of the potential risks for human exposure to the hazard, including how people may be exposed, susceptible populations, and known dose-response information. Inform the community about exposure prevention and other strategies that would be useful to members of your community to avoid adverse health outcomes
Describe how the health department plans to monitor the health status of the community
Describe innovative solutions, including any regulatory basis for the planned process (e.g., enforcement or creation of new policies/mandates), other agencies or expertise involved, and how you might mobilize community members and organizations to be a part of the process
Describe how your solutions will be evaluated. Briefly explain the evaluation design, including outcomes to be measured, and a few strengths/limitations of your approach.
References – APA formatted list. Cite the sources that you used in your report. Use in-text citations to be clear what portions of the text came from what source and then list the full sources in APA format at the end of your paper. If you use any images, be sure they are public domain or your own and be aware of copyright laws.
