(Basic Trust vs. Basic Mistrust Birth to 1 year)
According to Erickson, the first stage of a persons social and emotional development is basic trust vs. basic mistrust. This stage occurs between 0 to 1 year of age in which an infant needs to develop trust. An infant can develop trust or mistrust depending on how adequately their needs are met and by how much love and attention they receive (Passer et. al., p. 454). The element of trust can be formed within their environment through interactions with caregivers like feeding, affection, and care. If an infant’s needs are not met due to lack of parenting, affection, and care mistrust can develop. This is a very important stage in a child’s life as it plays a vital role in shaping how they navigate through the rest of the stages in their life.
An example of the first social and emotional development stage is the 1999 film, Tarzan. In this film, Tarzan is an orphaned infant when Kala, who is an ape, finds him. Kala recognizes that Tarzan is in need of care and takes it upon herself to raise him and become his mother. Kala took care of Tarzan, made sure his needs were met, and was very affectionate towards him. Kala fought to keep him even when the ape leader told her to return him and she protected him from Sabor, a leopard who tried to kill them. Tarzan was able to build a sense of trust because of the care Kala provided him. He also grew to be a caring and trustworthy person in his adult life and was able to build a relationship with Jane. This film portrays how although Tarzan was an orphan, he was able to build a secure attachment with Kala who was able to meet his basic needs, love, and care for him thus appearing closer to the trust side rather than mistrust.
