Instructions for this essay assignment: To answer the questions below, you will need to go to YouTube and/or major national news Web sites by searching for actual media news reporting footage/segments covering a recent mass shooting. Choose from one of the following national online news outlets (CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, or FOX), and stay with that news outlet throughout this assignment.

During the course of this assignment, you will be analyzing the first 3 days of news media coverage of this event going back to when the story first broke. In your research, you should see hour-by-hour reporting continuously unfolding. Watch how reports develop throughout the first day, then go to the second and third days and make the same observations. Pay close attention to how the news stories change drastically as additional information comes in.

Then as directed in Part II, towards the end of this assignment, you will speed ahead and find two recent news reports or articles about the massacre and look for differences in the facts since that first week. In other words, point out all of the misinformation reported the first week that has been ruled out by now as wrong.

You are required to write a 3- to 4-page (500-750 words) critical thinking essay that analyzes each of the media reporting stages below in Part I of this assignment. Then, follow the instructions and write about Part II of the assignment. Outside information sources will be your primary resource for this assignment.

Part I:

Stage 1Tragic Shock:
Assignment: Refer to the attached additional materials and note the bolded areas. Find media reports beginning in the first couple hours after this massacre began. Search for Stage 1 comments and quote them. Then do this for Day 2 and again for Day 3.

Stage 2First Witness Reports:
Assignment: Describe how the media presents first witness reports. Look for frequency, contradictions, and impact of these reports.

Stage 3Reports of Character (Shooter):
Assignment: Look at the shooters problems in life. What type of employment did he have? Did he try for better jobs but could not get them? What was his home life like? Basically, do the people who knew him describe him as troubled? If so, how did the media describe him?

Stage 4Media Branding (Packaging a Story):
Assignment: Describe the branding and packaging of this incident.

Part II

Assignment: Finally, once you have found answers/information for each of the above four stages, find follow up reports (one week to a month afterwards) and compare the follow up reports versus the first few days. Describe any changes in the focus of reporting.
