The PICO model was introduced to familiarize you with how healthcare practitioners innovate and implement nursing best practice. In the next step of your student growth, you will use peer-reviewed articles to discover current evidence-based practices (EBP) used in the acute care clinical setting. Consider how they were adopted, incorporated, and how they are currently improving patient outcomes. Explore possible barriers for nurses in the implementation phase.
Why is this important to bedside nurses? We are first-line advocates for quality and individualized patient care. Additionally, we are stewards, determining allocation of limited resources in man power, services, and supplies. Consider the following statistics:
· National health spending is projected to grow at an average rate of 5.5% per year and projected to reach $5.7 trillion by 2026 (cms.gov).
· Medicare (7.4% per year) and Medicaid (5.8% per year) yearly growth in spending substantially contributes to the national health expenditure (cms.gov).
· Patient safety practice processes reduce the probability of an adverse event. These processes begin with PICO and lead to research, EBP, and implementation.
