This episode reflects the how question. Read the conclusion of The Ludic City for this assignment. The goal is to frame the possibility of encounters between strangers (100). See how visibility, both from a distance and up close attracts the attention of passers-by. See how intersections can make contact with the greatest diversity of people, to general friction, to stimulate debate (102). Think about the combination of attention and inattention and transgression of personal boundaries (102). Think also about the role of buildings and their facades on these types of social or emotional encounters. Based on these tactics look for contrasts, compositions, and that which attracts strangers who have to share a tight space for different reasons. Look for signs that guide or point you to how shared space shapes how people encounter. Again, you can use photos, maps, and words to describe your experience. Remember that there is no right or wrong answer so long as you have reasons for your remarks.
You will be doing three things for this assignment:
1) Making a map of your neighborhood or city that points out two places: (1) a place that facilitates encounters well and (2) a place that could be improved in terms of encounter.
2) Describe the places youve chosen and why you chose them using the elements that Quentin Stevens uses. These are paths, intersections, boundaries, props, and thresholds. Talk about at least 2-3 examples per place.
Written part should be 1 margins, 12 point Times New Roman, and double-spaced
3) Describe each place and why you chose them using Quentin Stevens elements. Use at least 2-3 examples per place.
-For the place that could be improved, you might discuss lack of elements and how added elements could improve encounter. Or, you might discuss how elements do not function properly.
