Assignment Requirements
Student will write a short summary of the chosen film or book, including
identifying important characters and information relevant to the assignment.
This should not be more than one or two paragraphs. This paper is not a
summary of the story.
Student will identify and analyze the possible human service issues in the
story (mental illness, grief & loss, homelessness, disability, etc..) and discuss
how those issues are shown in the story
Is the issue obvious or are there only symptoms or signs of the issue
(Example: does a character have an established mental illness or are you
assuming they do based on behavior?)
Describe all behavior that indicates the issue or issues you see in the
story. (This can include hallucinations, change in behavior, talking to
themselves, physical restrictions, decrease in speech or communication,
etc.). If you think a character is grieving, what behavior makes you think
that?
How does the issue affect the character and the other people around
them?
How does the film or book portray the issue (mental illness,
homelessness, abuse, etc)? Does it demonize those who are experiencing
it or does it normalize it? Does it make fun of the issue/do characters
laugh at the person with the issue? Does the issue negatively affect the
character?
3) Student will give an honest and thorough response to the issues and
behaviors shown in the story. Use self awareness to express your reactions to
the characters, their behavior, and the issues addressed in the story. How do
you feel when you watch or read about the characters? What reactions or
judgments do you have? How does the main character’s behavior affect you?
Student will exercise empathy by choosing one character and discussing that
character’s point of view. How does the character feel about what happens in
the story? Why do they behave the way that they do? Can you put yourself in
their position and understand their choices? Use the definition of empathy
used in class to explain how you are practicing empathy (instead of
sympathy).
5) Student will identify any human services and resources that may benefit 1 or
more characters in the story. If they are grieving what might help them? If
a
they have mental illness what resources would you suggest? (Hint: Would
they benefit from inpatient or outpatient treatment? Do they need substance
use rehabilitation or treatment?) Would they accept help? Why or why not?
6) Choose any statement made by the character you chose and write the quote
in your assignment. Then respond to that statement as their human service
professional using the basic helping skill “clarifying”. Go over the slides
covering clarifying and come up with a response that reflect one of the three
aspects of clarifying (paraphrasing, highlighting, summarizing). Once you
have written your response using one of the three aspects, explain why this is
an example of that aspect.
7) Discuss how services provided by social policy could help the character
(Example: Would access to more comprehensive treatment for mental illness,
addiction, homelessness, or whatever human service issue they are
experiencing, help them?) In your opinion, are there laws/ policies that could
change or be created to better support the character? Explain your answers,

Final paper will be on
Precious (Film or Book)
Developmental Disability, abuse, neglect.
