The purpose of this assignment is to ensure that you have a good understanding of some of the basic concepts in chapters 9, 10, & 11. The ways people in different groups express themselves can tell us a great deal about their culture. Detailed responses to the questions below will demonstrate your full understanding of these various concepts. I expect about 1-2 pages (200-300 words) per question. You should do some outside research on these topics and use that research to enhance your response to the questions. Be sure to cite all your outside sources, both in-text and in a Works Cited section at the end of the paper. Do not rely heavily on quotations. I am looking for you to demonstrate that YOU have a good understanding of these concepts.

Assignment Topics

1.Locate two specific and unusual examples of non-verbal communication that could be perceived differently by different cultural groups. Do not use eye contact as your example. Explain each example in the home culture and how it could be perceived by someone outside that culture.

2.Organized religions, like Christianity or Judaism, are very different from the shamanistic belief systems found in small scale societies. Compare and contrast these two types of belief systems by selecting two of the following traits: leader training, documentation/doctrine, ritual practices, or poly/mono theistic beliefs. Discuss your selected traits in detail by providing concrete examples and explanations that illustrate the differences.

3.Describe a category of cultural art, the group in which it is found, and the cultural significance to the group. Do not select a specific art work, like a Picasso painting; select a general art form of some type, like sand painting, tattooing, weaving, or dance.
