Demographic Table

Review your scope of work, and identify the community of interest for your project as well as the surrounding population
Remember, you will make your table about the larger population, not the subset for which your project is applicable
example: your community of interest is new parents in Pierce County, so your demographic table reflects descriptive data for Pierce County population as a whole
Do not begin this assignment until you have a satisfactory grade for [completion/of] the previous assignment, Scope of Work plan with capstone partner signature
Search relevant secondary data sources
As you have probably noticed, you probably will not find up-to-date demographic information from peer-reviewed journal articles or the media. Public health authority websites, like Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, WA State Department of Health, the US Census, CDC, WHO, and other institutions will produce large data sets on regular intervals with [somewhat] current information that you can use for your table

This means you will start the table with an excel spreadsheet, enter your data there and then transfer your data into word
Summary statistics are not applicable to all variables and data tables, reach out if you need help with that
You will need correct APA citation for the sources of data that you use for your table
Correct labels and formatting are also important for the table
Remember what kind of variables you are using, which can help you figure out how to display them on the table
Continuous variables will have a range and a mean (arithmetic average, e.g: HH income)
Categorical variables (e.g: race, gender) may need multiple lines on your table to show frequencies and percentages for each category
Use a minimum of FIVE demographic variables that would constitute descriptive data, and again, are not part of the health problem of interest, but rather are characteristics of the population where your community of interest exists
Example: If your project is advocacy for medically under-insured people in Kansas, then your table should reflect data about Kansas as a state, starting with the entire population number at the top of the table and including characteristics of the state popln such as the following: 1) health coverage as a categorical variable (employer coverage, purchased insurance, no coverage), 2) proportion and number of population living without a home. (Include frequency and percentage columns!), 3) Educational attainment level 4) Income (continuous), income level (categorical) or poverty line (binary) – if you use poverty line – make sure to define it! 5) Race/ ethnicity distribution in the state
Do not use biological “sex” as a binary category, instead use GENDER on your table: with male, female, non-binary
You may want to make separate tables, one with continuous data and one with categorical, so that you can use “summary statistics” for your continuous data and simple frequency / percentage for your categorical data

Describe each variable in 50-100 words below the table, so in total it will be about 1-1.5 pages with the table + description of your table

Criteria for Success
Use this assignment to begin your literature review, and start cataloging your sources in a spreadsheet or database
You will need to include this in your literature review assignment AND in the citation section below your table and description of this assignment
Return to your SOW to make sure you are making a table for the correct population
Remember to use the broader population for your table, not just data about your community of interest
Be clear about which variables are categorical and which are continuous for your table, since your continuous VAR will probably need to be represented in means and ranges, and your categorical will have multiple rows in the table to show freq and percentage of categories (like race/ ethnic categories or educational level categories, etc.)
