According to media researchers, magazines meet readers’ needs and wants in 5 ways. This “Uses and Gratifications Theory” is discussed in Chapter 1 page 8 of The Magazine from Cover to Cover, 3rd edition, edited by Sammye Johnson and Patricia Prijatel.
Your assignment is to discuss how this Pulitzer Prize-winning article (Links to an external site.) on the death of Ahmaud Arbery appearing in the June 2020 issue of Runner’s World meets these 5 needs. Define and explain each need per the textbook above, and give a specific example from the article of how this need is met for you, as a reader. In conclusion, did the article meet all 5 needs well, in your opinion?
There is no specific page count for this assignment, but I suggest that 7 paragraphs may suffice. The first paragraph, the intro, should restate the goal of your paper, and include your sources by title, author, date, and publication (there are two sources to cite here). The last paragraph is your conclusion, where you answer my final question. In between, there should be 5 body paragraphs, one for each need, which you will name, define, and prove.
One other piece of advice: this article is long but engaging. The “5 needs” box is short but important. Read it first, make sure you understand what the 5 needs are, then skim the article to find your examples, slowing down in places that grab you and from where you expect to cite your proof.
