Requirements
Pick your dreamteam. Be sure to include folx you learned about this semester. Id love to see folx from before these two modules; I definitely need to see folx from Modules 12 and 13 (think activists/artists/folx in organizations). You can also call in people from your own life to engage in the conversation just make sure that include people from Module 12 + 13 too.
Decide where you are going to dinner. Have a little fun with this. Where did you go? What are folx wearing? Who orders what? Whats the conversation before dinner? Whats the music in the background? (You dont have to answer all of these questions. Im just giving you ideas.)
Check in. Let everyone say hi (as in, everyone in your dreamteam) and briefly introduce themselves and what theyve been up to. How are people working towards Black Liberation? This can be brief you dont have to fully research every one. For Joseph for example, you could say, Ive been spreading UndocuJoy and loving my podcast. Be sure to include yourself in the conversation your voice matters here too.
Black Liberation and Joy. Be sure to write dialogue for this section. Start with the idea of abolition as a garden, and then more broadly discuss Black Liberation and Joy. Be sure to include all four forms of liberation (immigrant justice, birth justice, food justice, abolition). Have 2-3 members of your dreamteam discuss quotes (from Modules 12 and 13) and what the words mean to them. This part of the assignment may feel tricky for some of us. How exactly could we know what brings Nap Bishop Hershey or Loretta Ross or Leah Penniman or Natasha Womack thinks about any of this? Answer: we dont. This is your imagined conversation.
Examples. What are some examples of Black liberation and Black Joy that resonate with your dreamteam? You can draw from their profiles to help inform your answers, or come up with things that might bring folx joy. This part of the assignment may feel tricky for some of us. How exactly could we know what brings Tim Fielder or Miss Major or Black farmers or birthing parents joy? Answer: we dont. This is your imagined conversation. There is something powerful about sitting with and dreaming in liberation and joy. Even conceptually.
After Dinner. What happens next? Is there decadent desert? Does the Nap Bishop convince everyone to take a nap? Is there dancing? You get to decide how the evening ends.
Conclusion. What was it like to write this dinner out? Reflect a little on experiences of writing about Black trauma and pain vs. Black joy and liberation. What emotions came up? What does our culture promote? Why is joy so deeply tied to Black liberation?
Notes on doing well on this assignment:
Be sure to talk about abolition, birth justice, food justice, and immigrant justice. All four.
While you can include 1-2 people who are not assigned in this section (your mom can for sure attend! so can your beloved ancestor), be absolutely sure that most of the people at dinner are from this section.
Have fun. This isnt your standard assignment. Its at the end of the semester. Were all tired and dreaming of rest. Please dont stress out about getting it right. Just dream a little. And write a little. Promise that if you do the reading and show that to me, youre in great shape for this assignment.
