Student access to arts education and the quality of instruction in the nations public schools continue to be of concern to policymakers, educators, and families. Dance education is especially under-represented within schools across the United States. There are millions of students who do not have access to dance, especially students within poorer communities. Dance should be accessible in all schools to provide alternative ways for learning, self-expression, and physical activity. Through dance, healthy social relationships can also be taught in school, making dance vital for positive social change within our educational school system.

Dance is equally important as any other school subject, like mathematics. Mathematics is not taught within schools to make everyone a mathematician. Some math skills are helpful in everyday life. Therefore, would it be acceptable for millions of students not to have access to math? Of course not. Then why is it acceptable for millions of students not to have access to dance within the educational school system? Dance should be treated as equally crucial to any other academic subject because many valuable skills are to be learned and applied daily.
