To fulfill the assignment: students will:
* complete the quiz listed above (be sure to write down your responses since you will not receive a final print out at the conclusion of the quiz) as though you are starting a medical office
* analyze your personal results/ learn more about your knowledge and understanding of cultural competency
* visit the office of a Western medical practitioner and assess visual cues pertaining to cultural competency
Students are to summarize their personal quiz results and address how their level of cultural competency may improve over the course of the semester. Also, they must demonstrate how a minimum of two concepts from class readings relate to cultural competency.
Lastly, visit an office of a Western medical practitioner. This may be a doctor, dentist, physical therapist or any other practitioner within the allopathic medical system. Look for visual cues that relate to cultural competency. Be sure to look at displays, pamphlets, art work, etc. What cues do you see that relate to the quiz and the readings on cultural competency? Describe in some detail how the practitioner can improve the visitor’s impression of cultural competency in two specific areas. Please use your reading (and the quiz) to support your claims. Connecting to class readings is an essential component of this assignment.
No outside research is required but this is a formal paper, so references are a must. Please use either APA or MLA format. (Details on both APA and MLA format appears in the “Important Resources at PCC” module from your home page.)
You must utilize a minimum of two resources from class readings. This paper will be run through turnitin.com score.
