Option One
You are supervising a relatively green, or new, unlicensed, prone-to-be-anxious, defensive, over-confident psychologist. You took him on as a favor for a colleague, who was his dissertation advisor. The supervisee calls your cell phone on a Saturday evening as you are about to go out to dinner with friends and says that he has a client on the other line who is acutely suicidal and who is considering killing her three-year-old along with herself. She has a loaded gun and a past history of suicide attempts. She is also drunk. Your supervisee is clearly distraught, not listening very well to you, responding to your initial suggestions with “yes, but”, and relaying to you information about the woman’s history that does not square with the relatively benign presentation he made about her at the last supervisory meeting. If you had a crystal ball and could have predicted this would occur a month before it happened, what would have best managed this situation regarding:
Issues related to confidentiality.
Agreement about who is ultimately in charge of the case.
Understandings about what is presented in supervision.
Documentation.
Selection of supervisees.
Anything else you think is relevant.
