Issue:
Lawns produce no crops and occupy more land (40 million acres) in the United States than any single crop, such as corn. This means the United States is operating inefficiently and hence is at a point inside the production possibilities curve. Right? If not, what does it mean?
Crops could be grown in more populated areas and lawns but with the differing soil types, vitamins/ minerals needed for crops, and property value increasing it is not feasible for long term usage. There are several factors that go into growing crops that not all lawns can be suited for. I would argue that well-kept grounds not only increase the property value significantly, but also encourage urbanization in more rural areas which in turn brings a better economic standpoint. So, to me, the United States in operating as efficiently as possibly being a free nation. The U.S. is not at a point on the inside of the production possibilities curve but on the curve
Another example
In the United States, I do not believe we are operating inefficiently. Yes, there is a huge amount of lawns and property that occupy space but that does not mean its being used inefficiently. In fact this large amount of land is efficient, a lot of privately owned land is well kept and in good shape, there’s no need for crops. In someone were to live in the city, downtown and had land, they wouldn’t be able to properly grow crops. There’s many harmful products floating around in overpopulated areas. Crops in these areas would more than likely die, therefore that would be an inefficient use of land for crops. Also not everyone who owns land has the right amount of funds to grow crops, its expensive.
