Critically examine the evidence of and hypotheses about when, where, and, perhaps, how spoken language first emerged in humans.

You are also required to write a 10-to-12-page research paper (not counting the bibliography, title page, images, figures, tables). You must choose a topic (see below) within the first three weeks of the course and inform the tutor-marker of your choice through the Discussions area. This will give you plenty of time over the course of the term to carry out the necessary research for the paper. Your main literature sources should be academic journals and academic books (available online at the SFU LibraryLinks to an external site.). You must include a minimum of eight references in your bibliography, of which five must be from refereed (academic) journals. The document Writing Academic Papers, includes both strict, required formatting criteria as well as helpful general information about various things like the different types of literature sources and which of these are appropriate and which should not be used, so it is very important that you read it carefully.
