The book The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea was written by
Gomes Eanes de Zurara. Zurara was a learned and obedient commander for Prince Henrys Military order of Christ. Zuara was commissioned by Prince Henrys nephew, King Afonso V to write a biography of the life and slave-trading work of his uncle (Prince Henry). In 1453, Zurara completed the inaugural defense of African slave-trading, which was the very first European book on Africans in modern era. This book was called The Chronicle of the Discovery and Conquest of Guinea. This book is initially about the start of recorded history of anti-Black racist ideas. In this book Zuraras racist ideas were a product of Prince Henrys racist policies concerning African slave-trading. In Zuraras book he mentions that the Portuguese were the first to sail along the Atlantic beyond the Western Saharas Cape Bojador in order to bring enslaved Africans back to Europe. Prince Henry made the slave auction into a spectacle to show Portuguese had joined the European league of serious slave-traders
of African people. The ethnic word slave came from the word Slavs, which was what they called the Eastern Europeans who had been seized by Turkish raiders from areas around the Black Sea. Overtime Black slaves increased because the Slavic communities had built forts against slave raiders causing the supply of Slavs in Western Europes slave market to plunge. According to Zuraras chronicle, some of the Captives in 1444 were white enough and others were mulattoes, but others were as black as Ethiops, and so ugly, Zurara reported. The captives took many people of different skin tones for the Tuareg Moors, and the dark-skinned people were more than likely enslaved by the Tuareg Moors, Zurara was the first illustrious European producer of racist ideas. Another man by the name of Al-Hasan Ibn Muhammad Al Wazzan Al- Fasi also known as Joannes Leo Africanus was a well-educated Moroccan. He joined his uncle on a diplomatic mission down into the Songhay Empire. Eight years later Africanus was enslaved on another diplomatic voyage along the Mediterranean Sea. At the age of twenty-four Africanus was presented to a Pope named Leo X in Italy. Before the Pope died in 1521, he set free Africanus, that is where he started his Christianity journey and that is when he was renamed Johannes Leo. Africanus was then commissioned by the Pope to write a survey about Africa. Later he became known as Leo the African, or Leo Africanus. He surely did satisfy the Italians curiosity in 1526 with his first survey of Africa in Europe, which was called Della dscrittione dellAfrica (Description of Africa). In Africanus survey he described the etymology of Africa and he also described Africas languages, cultures, religions, geography, and diseases. Africanus says, There is no Nation under Heaven
more prone to Venery [sexual indulgence]. In my opinion I believe a statement like that was said so Europeans can justify why they continuously raped African people. He also says, They behave themselves, as if they had continually lived in a Forrest among wild beasts. Africanus did not mind if Africans were denigrated because he thought he was describing Africans perfectly accurate. Africanus set himself through his survey as the worlds first known African racist, and the first illustrious African producer of racist ideas. Africanus considered himself to be a historiographer charged with telling the plain truth in all places. After Africanus manuscript was finished in 1526 it was published in Italian in1550, then it was translated to Latin and French. Western European people were reading it and tying African people to hypersexuality. They were also comparing African people to animals. Because of the horrible impact Africanus made from his manuscript it is safe to say he was an extremely racist man, he even said so himself. His manuscript only betrayed Africans in the worst way possible. I would say along with Africanus, Zurara and him played a big part in how the world is now, and how Black people are still be treated all the way up until this moment in time.
