To earn a great grade, the most important thing is simply to demonstrate how well you know both works of art — this is your chance to show how hard you’ve studied! But rather than simply tell us everything you have learned, you must selectively present what you know about both works of art in order to articulate what you consider the most important difference between them. This is involves clearly explaining just what that difference is and then explaining why it matters so much. It also means presenting specific details to illustrate this argument in a series of well-constructed body paragraphs which each illustrate a single point from your argument.

In deciding what is the most important difference, there is essentially no limit you can talk about the message the artist is trying to communicate or you can discuss how the work of art was created. You are always welcome to describe the emotions it communicates, or the technical devices which bring it to life. You can also write about the work of art in terms of its meaning for the original audience. As long as you articulate the difference clearly, this part of your opening statement will always be acceptable. The important thing is to explain how the difference expresses itself in each work of art. If you have decided to discuss how the two works each inspire different feelings, briefly describe just what those feelings are. If you choose to talk about how the two works each convey a different message, you must spend a few sentences summarizing both message.

In the case of why the difference matters, you have at least three clear choices. First, you can argue that the difference you have identified matters because it changes everything else. For example, a single step in processing tea can change the taste, smell, and appearance of the leaves. Second, you can also argue that the difference bring us closer to understanding what is essential about both works of art. For example, you can say each work was designed to have an emotional impact, and so the fact that one work leaves us feeling cheerful and hopeful and the other leaves us uncomfortable and uncertain is the most important difference. Third, you can argue that the difference would have mattered most to the original audience. For example, you can say that a contrasting religious message is the most vital difference because both works of art being discussed were produced within the context of a deeply religious society.

After you craft your opening paragraph, it is a good idea to draft an outline for the paper as a whole. A good outline should have six parts, one for each paragraph. You should include 1) your opening, 2) a paragraph on what makes the first work of art different, 3) a paragraph on what makes the second work of art different, 4) a paragraph on why the difference you have identified matters in regards to the work of art, 5) a paragraph on why the difference matters in regards to the second work of art, and 6) a short closing paragraph in which you briefly restate your central argument.
