Consider how the maker of the contemporary image might have intentionally or unintentionally referenced the historical work. How are the two works similar?

Choose a historical artwork from the textbook, module or lectures, and compare it to an example of either contemporary art or from popular culture. The historical artwork must be from the period that we are covering in this course (after 1800). It may be painting, sculpture, architecture, print media, furniture, etc. For the comparison, you may choose any type of contemporary image or object (billboard, advertising, album covers, movie posters, video game ads, manga covers, etc.).

Consider how the maker of the contemporary image might have intentionally or unintentionally referenced the historical work. How are the two works similar? How are they different? When comparing the works, you should consider both formal attributes as well as meanings.

Choose your historical artwork from the textbook and find a contemporary artwork or image from popular culture to compare it to.
Consider both the formal and thematic points of comparison. Will you be able to develop a 4-5 page paper comparing these two works?
Your introduction should clearly state your argumentyour point of comparisonin the form of a thesis statement and support this claim throughout the body of your paper.
Then, support your comparison with a discussion of the artworks art-historical context by drawing from course materials. This includes any of the following: readings, lectures, course modules, and/or textbook. Your supporting evidence should also consider related works from course materials and the textbook.
You are also required to do research in order to support your comparison. Use at least three (3) resources from the OCADU Library databases: one (1) encyclopedia entry and two (2) journal articles or e-books. In addition, you may also consult museum websites as part of your research and discussion of the potential display of the object. You may also use your textbook, but it does not count as one of these three (3) library resources.
