Concert Review No. 1

Please see your syllabus in online classroom regarding how to access the department of music calendar of events and YouTube channel. Also be sure to review my grading policy for late assignments.
Concert Review Guidelines Reminder:
Don’t forget to upload a picture of your program with your review.
Everyone is allowed 2 streamed concerts on the UCA music youtube channel. They must be from this semester. 1 concert must be attended in person.
You must attend 1 solo concert, 1 chamber music concert, and 1 large ensemble concert.
Solo recital: Instrumental or vocalist with typically piano accompaniment. These concerts usually take place in the Snow Fine Arts building recital hall
Chamber music concert: A medium number of performers, typically 3-15. String Quartets, faculty chamber music concerts, percussion ensemble, etc.
Large Ensemble Concert: Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Band, Concert Choir
Make sure that on your review you include your name, course cumber (THIS IS NOT MUS2300, it’s the qualifying number, like 32510) whether you attended a solo, chamber, or large ensemble concert.
The format for your concert reviews is as follows. This should be done with bullet points and not as a written paper.
For each piece on the concert you attend, I would like you to:
make 4 reflective statements about what you liked or didn’t like about the individual pieces on the program and WHY!!! (This may be bullet points)
A piece of music may have multiple movements indicated by roman numerals or qualifying tempo markings. Below is an example you might encounter.
Title of Work

II or Slowly, with feeling

2 statements about the piece as a whole (not the individual roman numeral movements) what stuck out to your ear and WHY!!! The entire review my be done with bullet points, with the exception of the final paragraph.
Final paragraph written with correct grammar: did you enjoy the concert as a whole, why or why not?
You need to be specific in listing the piece you are commenting on, for example:
Prelude No. 8 by Frederick Chopin, Performed by .
4 reflective statements:
I enjoyed the fast paced tempo in this piece because I tend to enjoy more upbeat music
I did not enjoy this piece at all because it sounded chaotic with too many moving parts and dissonances
This piece made me think about while I was listening, and I was amazed at the different dynamics the pianist was able to achieve.
I thought this piece reflected what I read in the program notes because…
2 things that stuck out to my ear:
The way the woodwind instruments blended really stuck out
I was amazed how quitely and in tune to choir could sing
Final Paragraph at the end of the entire review
Did you enjoy the concert as a whole? Why or why not? Would you attend this sort of concert again? Did you like the instruments or the vocalists? Again, these are just examples.
Please use correct grammar in this final paragraph
These are surface level suggestions and I do not expect to see these verbatim in your reflections.
You must upload a copy of the program, unless we have made prior arrangements.
Please use song and piece correctly. A song has words, a piece does not.
Italicize titles of works every time and not composer’s names.
If you choose to use musical terms, use them correctly.
I want to know what you think, not a total regurgitation of the program notes.
The paper you receive at the concert is a program, not a flyer or pamphlet.
Do not take notes during a performance with your phone or laptop, it is disturbing to the rest of the audience and sometimes the performer.

Typically there is a link to the program under the concert video.
You must write about each piece on the program to receive full credit, meaning you must attend the ENTIRE concert. You will turn in your report and program on Blackboard.

Concert Reports:
Each student will attend 3 concerts this semester and write a report over each concert.
Each student must attend 1 large ensemble concert, 1 chamber concert, and 1 solo
recital. You must attend 1 concert in person, and then you may livestream 2 of the 3
concerts, but these must be concerts taking place THIS semester. If you stream a
concert from a previous semester, the best grade you can get is an 85%. For livestream
concerts, there is usually a google doc program link under the video that you will need
for your reference. You can access livestream concerts through UCAs department of
music YouTube channel. A calendar of events can be found at the following website:

This link will take you to the page listing all the main public concert events on campus.
A link to the UCA music YouTube page is also located on this page for the concerts you
choose to livestream this semester. All recitals listed will take place in the Snow Fine
Arts Recital Hall. If you see RPA listed when you click on an event, this means the
concert will take place in Reynolds Performance Hall. You will notice that some student
recitals are not public events. If you would like to attend one of these recitals, please
contact Cole Cavanah in the UCA department music office, or the UCA recording studio
during regular business hours to get a password to livestream. You may also contact the
music office if you have any questions concerning where the event will be held.
Off campus performances (non-UCA related) must be pre-approved by the professor.
