This is the essay you would be responding to:
“The two events I chose are the Lewis and Clark expedition and the California gold rush. I believe the Lewis and Clark expedition had the most impact on westward expansion because it defined the boundary of the land and defined the geographical makeup of the territory. Maybe people would have only settled a little further each time if they had not known the boundaries of the land. The gold rush certainly brought many to the west but it was Lewis and Clark that ventured there first before the events of the gold rush would take place.
This idea of Manifest Destiny would change the lens in which Lewis and Clark would see their travels. Instead of exploring for the sake of exploring, they would map out the Western United states with direction from the government. The whole purpose of sending them westward was to establish routes to the Pacific Ocean so the ports of China were accessible and promote commerce (Corbett, et al., 2019).
The California gold rush would open the gates of the West not only to Americans but those from other countries as well. Promises of land and opportunity were one thing, but the promise of gold and wealth had people determined to claim their stake in the jackpot. This flocking group of people would align with the idea of the manifest destiny, many with little regard for the natives to the land (Roberts, 2000).”
