Compare the book I chose (The Beautiful Things that Heaven Bears by Dinaw Mengestu), to 3 other books I read this semester. 1) An Honest Exit by Dinaw Mengestu, 2) Aguantando by Junot Diaz, 3) Mother Tongue by Amy Tan. Please notice what the teacher states about the compare and contrast essay at the end of the directions.
Teachers Directions:
For your final essay of 4-5 pages (1200 words), you will be introducing a work of migration literature that was not on the syllabus, analyzing it, and connecting it to the ones that we read together. There are many possibilities. In the essay itself, your assignment is to analyze the work and connect it to at least three other works weve read in class. It could be a story in the anthology or one uploaded on Canvas.
At least one of the connections must be on the basis of form/style/aesthetics/narrative or literary technique, and the others may discuss either form or content. In other words, you could make
one connection on the basis of form and two on content; two on form and one on content; two of each; one and three; all form; etc.). Each connection may discuss differences as well as
similarities (e.g., both authors use a non-linear timeframe, but they use that technique for different reasons and to a different effect). The connection should not overshadow your own analysis of your chosen text. You can make the connection using a few sentences in different
paragraphs. Some aspects to consider include voice, structure, artistic agenda, audience(s), characters, relationship of author and narrator, types of discourse and language present, and specific
historical references. Please cite all sources, even the ones you merely consult. Note that this is not a compare-and-contrast essay; rather, you will be using an assortment of other texts about
migration (i.e., the course readings) as a conceptual framework for understanding the one youve chosen to look at on your own. Be sure to back up all your points with direct textual evidence
(quotes) from both your chosen reading as well as the course readings.
