1. How does Arendt respond to Plato’s defense of lies and deception by rules over their subjects? How does she view such lies as related to justice, and how does this compare or contrast with Plato’s view? To what extend would this critique of lies and deception in politics apply to the social contract in Hobbes (since this is also fiction)?
2. Compare and contrast the views of justice and freedom in Plato and Hobbes. To what extent does the Hobbesian social contract limit freedom and to what extent does it establish or protect it? Overall, would it be fairer to characterize Hobbes as a defender of freedom or a critic of it?
3. What (according to Hobbes) is wrong with freedom in the state of nature, and how does his theory allow for its exchange with the kind of freedom that exists under the social contract? Compare and contrast these two conceptions of freedom with each other. Are persons still free in a meaningful sense while under the authority of a sovereign? Do they lose any valuable kind of freedom in this condition? is there any sense in which person are less free in the state of nature, compared to it (and if so, what freedoms is gained in the transaction)?
