As a class, we have now read Ibsen’s A Doll’s House and Hurston’s Color Struck. While these 2 plays were written in different decades, countries, and cultures, they share some similarities, especially in the significance of “setting” to the action of the plot.
In 600 – 1200 words, compare and contrast the role of the “Setting” or location in these 2 Realist plays. You may wish to discuss any of the following as your basis of comparison between the two works:
* Compare and contrast the descriptive detail each playwright gives to his or her stage directions about the setting.
* Compare and contrast the characters’ interactions with their settings in each work (i.e., how does the physical location of each scene affect the characters’ behavior and vice versa? How do the characters connect and react to their physical surroundings?)
* Compare and contrast the setting’s effect on language and music in each play (i.e., does the location of the scene affect the dialect or style of dialogue spoken by the characters? Does the location require certain sound effects or musical choices that a different location might not?)
* How would certain aspects of each play change if the setting were changed to our modern-day world in Ft. Pierce, FL? Would any aspects not be affected and stay the same?
