Community Sustainability Gap Analysis and Recommendation

This gap analysis assignment is designed to introduce you to community-level responses to sustainability issues and is a valuable skill used frequently in the professional world. The purpose of this assignment is to get some practice conducting a gap analysis and to deepen your understanding of sustainability issues at the local level. You will conduct a gap analysis to build skills in communicating a sustainability issue in your community with solid recommendations for ways to close the gap. Your intended audience will be the community council of your chosen community.

This is an exercise in exploring how to make your community a better place – safer, cleaner, more equitable, resilient, and sustainable place to live and work. In a community of your choice either Corvallis or another community you care about you are to apply critical sustainability thinking based on what youve learned thus far in the course to a sustainability issue in a real community through a gap analysis.

What is a gap analysis? A gap analysis (Links to an external site.) is an examination and assessment of current performance for the purpose of identifying the differences between your current state of unsustainability and where youd like to be.

To determine gaps, first understand (1) the current status of a particular community sustainability issue that you feel is problematic, (2) establish a desired state of a preferred future reality, (3) point out the gaps between current reality and desired future, and (4) propose an ideal sustainability solution to address the gap to the community council.
