Film Response Paper #1
Self-Disclosure in Ordinary People

In an essay of around 600+ words, discuss the principle of self-disclosure as
dramatized in the 1980 Robert Redford film Ordinary People. Within the structure
of your paper, respond to the following questions/guidelines. Youre free to
organize the paper as you see best, but include the following information in a
multi-paragraph essay with a clear introduction (with thesis statement), body, and
conclusion. (Dont just answer by number but find a creative way to address this
information within a creative essay.)

1. Identify several examples of self-disclosures Conrad makes in the film. (Be
specific in defining and illustrating each part of the definition of self disclosure.)
2. Assess the disclosure level of each of the major characters (Conrad, Beth,
Calvin, and, if you choose, Dr. Berger or other characters). Are these
characters low or high self-disclosers?
3. Choose one significant self-disclosure from the movie. Analyze the self disclosure by answering the following questions:
What was the purpose of the self-disclosure? Was the purpose
accomplished?
Was the self-disclosure appropriate?
Was the self-disclosure reciprocated?
Did the benefits of the self-disclosure outweigh the costs?
4. Evaluate who the film most benefits from risking self-disclosure (and, if you
choose, who is most damaged from its affects).
5. Choosing one relationship from the movie, draw a Johari Window for both
characters in relation to the other. Explain the size of each window for both
characters and any differences between respective window sizes for both of
them. Within your discussion, include answers to the following:
How do the characters differences account for any communication
problems you can identify between them?
How does the length of time they have known each other affect the
respective sizes of the windows
