The past four weeks we have explored dating and sex online. Because I have a more specific assignment for the final paper, I wanted to make this paper more open and allow you to pick a topic from the past two weeks.

Onlyfans is a supposedly user-run cam site. Discuss the issues or current controversy about the site kicking off sex workers.
Queer or Female-centric sex toys
Sex Toys and privacy
Sex Robots
Dating apps – How they change dating/relationships
STI’s and Dating apps
Race, Gender, Ability and Dating apps
Revenge pornography

A topic not listed that fits into “Dating Online” or “Sex Online”
Your paper should be 1000-1500 words in length. Your topic needs to be specific, not broad. You need to engage with at least three texts. At least one should be from the course. One can be from the course or outside texts specific to your topic. At least one should be specifically about your topic. Use scholarly sources such as journal articles or books via the KU library.

I understand this is a broad prompt. Students from past semesters have requested more open-ended prompts like this one. The downside is that there are less instructions. You need to pick as specific of a topic as possible – a specific site to analyze, a specific issue, a specific dating app or website. You can do a compare and contrast – like how dating sites like OKCupid compare with dating apps. You can do a pros/cons essay. Or you can analyze one thing completely.

Remember, this is a WGSS course so you should consider intersectional issues like gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, and ability. Your essay doesn’t need to address all of these – but at least two to be thoughtful and intersectional.
