The Informative Speech is a 4-6 minute Informative speech that provides new knowledge or expands upon current knowledge on a particular topic. With this presentation, you are teaching the audience something new or expanding their knowledge on a subject. This presentation requires external source support (research) that must be orally cited within the presentation. A minimum of three sources are required. You are also required to incorporate a PowerPoint presentation with this speech.
This performance may focus on Objects, People, Places, Theories/Concepts, Occurrences, Events, and Medical Conditions. This cannot be a How to/Process/Demonstration Topic. The topic cannot be the same, or a variation of, the topic to be used for the Persuasive Speech. (Each presentation in the course must demonstrate a variety of topics, organizational patterns, and research focus.)
Three external sources are required and they must be properly orally cited within the presentation to receive credit.
There are Departmental Standards for the Informative Speech that must be met to receive credit. Please refer to those standards as you prepare the speech.

Typed Outline in the required format (Refer to Outline Requirements as provided in class. Outlines not following the course guidelines will not receive credit.)
Typed Bibliography/Works Cited page in APA Format
A minimum of three reference sources must be cited (oral footnotes) within the speech
PowerPoint (PPT) Required : 7 slides minimum
One other type of visual aid (not PPT) required. Excludes Chalkboards, Handouts and the Speaker as a Visual

Preparing for the Informative Speech:
For the Informative Speech Assignment, there are several steps in the preparation before you can record the actual speech.
The Informative Outline Draft.
As you have progressed through the course materials, you have analyzed the audience, selected topics appropriate to the audience, and learned how to structure and support your messages. For the Informative Speech, you will also be given some guidance in the preparation of your speech outline. A draft will be submitted to the instructor so that you may receive input before you prepare and submit the final outline and performance.
The Outline must follow the guidelines provided by the instructor. This format is different from an outline that may be used for writing a paper so please pay close attention to the format. The outline format and a checklist for verifying the format are included here.
