This Personal, Professional, and Academic Self-Assessment will help you evaluate the overlap among your personal, professional, and academic experiences and interests. It is designed so that you will be able to identify at least one social issue or problem that you can use as the focus of your final project. Complete the prompts under the personal, professional, and academic headings and complete an essay that synthesizes the overlap of your personal, professional, and academic experiences.
Personal
List three to five of the most important principles, events, experiences, aspects of your identity, or activities in your personal life that have been meaningful to you and have helped shape who you are and how you perceive yourself.
These could include:
Events and circumstances in your family life (marriage, divorce, children, parents).
How you self-identify (race, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, ability, language, etc.).
Joyful or traumatic events.
Any other key piece of your life that defines you.
Briefly describe those points, and discuss why they are central to who you are.
Professional
List three to five of the most important skills, experiences, talents, jobs, passions, or work-related strengths that define who you are as a professional.
These could include:
Specific training or certifications.
Particular jobs that you are proud of.
Specific skills or tasks that you believe you excel at.
Broad categories of work-related performance (relationships, networking, communication, graphic design, critical thought, etc.).
Briefly describe those points, and discuss why they are key to who you are as a professional.
Academic
List three to five of the most important courses, programs, instructors, assignments, books, or projects that you completed as part of your education, including K12, that have influenced how you think about yourself, the world, and society.
These could include:
A transformative reading from a class.
An inspirational teacher.
A project that you learned something powerful from.
A particular idea or concept that shaped your worldview.
Briefly describe those milestones, and discuss why and how they were influential and important to you.
Synthesis
Reviewing what you wrote for the above prompts, how and where do your personal, professional, and academic experience overlap? Identify three to four themes that connect your experiences across these three categories. Then identify which theme or pattern strongly runs through all three categories.
With the most important theme or pattern in mind, how does that inform the social issues, political issues, and problems that are most important to you? Using material from the readings, write an essay of 500 to 750 words (2 to 3 pages) that:
Explains how your personal, professional, and academic experience have contributed to your understanding of at least one social or political issue.
Explains why that particular social or political issue is important to you.
Your essay should be double-spaced and should use Times New Roman 12-point font, with 1-inch margins on all sides. Be sure to proofread and edit your essay carefully. Cite evidence and support from the readings in your essay using standard MLA format. This assignment will not be graded, but you will receive feedback from your mentor.
